Technical information load:

Buffalo horn is a 100% natural material derived from (water) buffaloes. The compact material is both hard and tough, and has therefore traditionally been used in the manufacture of knife handles. However, it is less resistant to large temperature fluctuations and is not suitable for the dishwasher. It is best washed by hand in lukewarm water with a mild detergent. As extra protection against drying out and cracking, the material is very finely and smoothly polished. It feels pleasantly soft and has a beautiful high-gloss appearance.

Technical information blade:

AISI 420 is a strong stainless steel alloy to which carbon has been added alongside chromium. This steel is less easily bent and is highly suitable for making knives. Through heat treatment, this steel is further hardened (HRC52/56), meaning the cutting edge is less prone to damage and remains sharp longer. Additionally, it is highly resistant to rust formation.

Difference between Classic, Exclusive, and Premium versions

There are three variants, each with its own intended use. They differ primarily in steel thickness and blade design.

Classic The 'classic' steak knife from Laguiole is the best-known variant; you see them in almost every French bistro. It is a robust yet simply designed steak knife with a 1.2 mm thick serrated blade that never needs sharpening. Ease of use is paramount here, but not everyone finds a serrated blade pleasant because it cuts through the meat in a somewhat rough manner. The set is packaged in a wooden knife block.

Exclusive: The 'Exclusive' series has been developed for enthusiasts who prefer a smooth-ground blade. These razor-sharp steak knives feel great in the hand and cut effortlessly through all types of meat. With a thickness of 1.5 mm, the blade is slightly heavier and, with careful use, hardly ever needs sharpening. The 6-piece set is packaged in a beautifully designed, lockable cutlery box.

Premium If you opt for luxury and top quality, choose the 'premium' variant, the flagship among steak knives. These knives also feature a smooth-ground blade, but with a steel thickness of 2.5 mm. The beautifully balanced knife cuts like the best. This is the knife for home cooks and culinary enthusiasts! The 6-piece set is packaged in a beautifully crafted, lockable cutlery box.

About Laguiole Jean Dubost

The Jean Dubost family business was founded in 1920. Today, it is run by the 4th generation, which combines traditional knife-making methods with modern industrial production techniques.

The Laguiole Jean Dubost range is manufactured entirely in France. With the exception of a few tropical hardwoods, all components, such as the steel and handles, also come from France. In the factory, raw steel (AISI 420 standard with a hardness of HRC 52/56) is transformed into a razor-sharp, highly polished blade in a process of 9 production stages. 1.5 million Laguiole steak knives are produced annually, nearly half of which are destined for export.

Original or fake?

Unfortunately, there is also imitation Laguiole that is primarily produced in China. Although often not immediately visible on the outside (the logo, the honeybee, is even copied), the material and workmanship are of significantly lower quality. Incidentally, imitation is easy to recognize. If "France" is not explicitly engraved on the steel blade of the knife, the knife was not produced in France and is therefore not authentic.
